Our Article of discussion is the act of service.

I strongly believe that the best and quickest way to wisdom and enlightenment is through service to others and our planet. Selfless service is the spirit of compassion in action. Service is the lack of ego and it is through the ashes of the ego that we can truly dedicate our lives to this enlightening quest.

Tenzin Gyatso the 14th Dalai Lama puts it beautifully in this quote” We begin from the recognition that all beings cherish happiness and do not want suffering. It then becomes both morally wrong and pragmatically unwise to pursue only one’s own happiness oblivious to the feelings and aspirations of all others who surround us as members of the same human family. The wiser course is to think of others when pursuing our own happiness”.

Anyone who despairs of the individual’s power to change lives has to read the story of Greg Mortenson, a homeless mountaineer who, following a 1993 climb of Pakistan’s treacherous K2, was inspired by a chance encounter with impoverished mountain villagers and promised to build them a school. I won’t use this space to repeat the descriptions already covered in the editorial reviews, but Greg Mortenson’s passion for educating children, especially girls, in the rugged mountain regions of northern Pakistan is truly remarkable.
